Highlands, North Carolina
Resetting & Reconnecting
As the busy holiday season took me in a whirlwind, this mini-vacation was quite wonderful. The day after Christmas, me and my family, and my aunt’s family, all headed up to Highlands, North Carolina for a little escape.
This place is so special to me because it’s a place where I get to reconnect with nature, by being outside a lot, going on hikes, and reconnecting with family and my cousins. We had a giant Nerf battle outside, played board games, went hiking, and overall just enjoyed each other’s company.

Disconnecting from the World
The very first time we went up to this house in the Highlands, there was no internet. My uncle hadn’t set up wifi yet, so when we were there, we were entirely disconnected from the world.
No social media, TV, or internet.
It was one of my best memories. We played games together, explored outside, went hiking, all sorts of fun activities that, honestly, we probably wouldn’t have done if we had had internet and been able to use technology.
It forced us to DO things, rather than just sit and stare at a screen all day.
Since then, their wifi is up and running, so technology can be used, but for me, this place is special. That first time there set the tone for how I wanted to spend all of my time there in the future.
We’ve been a few times since that initial visit, and although I could have my phone, be on social media, or watch TV, I always end up leaving my phone in my room, and acting as if I’m completely disconnected, like I was that first time.
